News
The school year is just around the corner and there has been a lot of exciting things going on at Onslow School that we would like to share with you.
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
The Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten has been learning about bugs and insects. If you ask they will be able to tell you that insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts. They might also be able to tell you all the things they have learned about grasshoppers, ants, spiders, ladybugs and bees.
We are also going to learn how a caterpillar becomes a Butterfly. We have been making lots of bug artwork, so if you come to our side of the hallway, don’t get scared. Make sure to check it out at the art show!
Cycle 1
Cycle 1 has been having loads of fun learning about art. We have studied the Mondrian and Pensylvannia Dutch styles and have had a chance to create some of our own pieces in those styles. The class really loves working in centres. We do Daily 5 for Language Arts. This includes:
- Listening,
- Reading to self,
- Reading to someone,
- Guided Reading,
- Writing and Working with Words.
We also use centres in math. This includes:
- Guided math,
- Paper Practice,
- Reflex Math on the computer and
- Math Games.
We have had a wonderful year so far and are looking forward to the many events coming up!
Cycle 2
Cycle 2 has also been hard at work. A few weeks ago the class was learning about Japan because they had read the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. They even had a Japanese lunch. The class is currently working on a science project about saving 21st century animals.
Wow, it’s been a busy term and only getting busier.
Cycle 3
Cycle 3 is in the middle of end of year exams, we have the softball tournament coming up, track and field, regionals, bike trips and Grade 6 graduation.
Wow the list goes on. Students have been working very well on their English Language Arts exam and they will need to maintain focus for the math exam.
Students may want to bring a ball glove to school so that we can practice for the softball tournament.
Silk Painting
Silk Painting makes a beautiful piece of art. The only tools you need are your imagination, dye and a paint brush. It’s not just an ordinary painting; it can show inspiration of your feelings. The way that the brush spreads the dye makes the drawing come to life. Having the beautiful colors spread out on the silk, puts smiles on people’s faces. Exploring an experience like this made the grade 5 and 6 class very happy and lucky.
When looking at silk painting, you feel very inspired and know it looks beautiful with colors everywhere. But when actually doing it, you bring out your creative side and let your imagination all come out. With the silk painting lying on your desk with the dye and the paintbrush in your hand waiting to paint, puts a flash of excitement in you.
First things first, you need a tray of salt, water, dye and paint brushes. After you’ve went over the pencil in purple marker and went over that with resist and fill the cracks you are then ready to express the different colors of dye all over the silk. Watching the dye spread is like a miracle spreading your imagination. Enjoying yourself silk paint makes you feel very happy and relaxed. It also makes you feel proud of your work and when you look at the hard and beautiful work you’ve done you realize you just need to have fun and let the brush and your imagination do the work!

Colores Andinos
The Latin music group came to perform for our student on March 30th. Everyone enjoyed the music, swaying and clapping to the rhythm. On April 12th they returned to teach the students how to use some of their instruments. The entire school got involved and had a blast playing and dancing. This event even got the attention of the local Equity newspaper and it featured 2 of our students on the front page of the Equity Newspaper.

Intramurals
They are going with the ball, they take a shot and it goes in! Intramurals is a thing we do at lunch time on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with Mr.Barlee. We play all different kinds of games like dodgeball, volleyball, basketball, handball and football! It is a lot of fun. Plus it is extra gym classes!
Only cycle 2.2 and cycle 3 are allowed in the gym. We are very lucky to have intramurals, but if we do anything bad or wrong then we either miss a lunch time of intramurals or are asked to leave.
When we are in the gym playing these games, Mr.Barlee helps us get better at that sport and teaches us tricks of the game. When I go to intramurals the game that I like the most is basketball, since I played basketball in intramurals I have gotten better at it! I really have fun in intramurals and I think everybody else does! But keep in mind you have to be good during school hours to go to intramurals at lunch time!
