Progress Report and Report Cards
Your child received a Progress Report on Thursday, October 13th with Yellow, Red or Green indicating your child’s academic progress and attitude to study. This is an indication of their progress to date and will be useful to assist students who are experiencing difficulties before the first report card is issued on November 18th, 2011.
All 19 students who received a “Green” for ALL subjects in academic performance AND behavior, will be rewarded with tickets to an Ottawa 67’s hockey game on Monday, November 7th, 2011. These students will attend the hockey game with St. Michael’s teachers and enjoy a day of fun!
Please encourage your child to strive for “All Greens” on their report card!
Respect for Property
This school year there have been unusually high incidences of student property being left in the school yard, in the gym, on top of lockers, in classrooms and even in the washrooms. Our Lost and Found bench has not closed entirely since school began. During Tribe Time today, all of these items were put on display on the stage and all students were asked to claim their lost items. Anything not claimed will be donated to Good Will. Please discuss this with your child as many items such as binders, hats, coats and even jeans have not been claimed.
We also ask that parents discuss the importance of respecting property that does not belong to their child. Some students are littering the school grounds or writing on walls in the bathrooms. This behavior is unacceptable and parents will receive an invoice for damages if a student is discovered vandalizing school property. Respect for others and their property is the basis for a strong and positive learning environment.
Upper Gatineau River Run/Gatineau River Clean Up
Special thanks to Mr. Alan Earwaker, Mr. Steve Greig and Mr. Magnus Eriksson for making these two events a huge success!
On September 26th, senior students and local volunteers participated in the 6th annual Gatineau river clean-up. Students collected garbage in bags on the islands, left them there and paddled to the next island. Volunteers in motor boats picked up the bags for disposal. Mr. Greig reports that there was less garbage this year and we are hoping that visitors to the river are taking better care of their surroundings! Volunteers were able to clean approximately two extra kilometres of shore line this year! Way to care for our planet!!!
Canoe Races
Our students enjoyed canoe races on the Gatineau river with visiting schools Maniwaki Woodland , Dr. Wilbert Keon from Chapeau and Pontiac High School in Shawville competing. Almost one hundred participants braved the rain on September 30th and enjoyed a day on the river. Congratulations to the St. Michael’s teams who placed 1st in overall time and took the trophy home! As well, congratulations to Mandii Griffith and Tom Pilon who took 3rd place in the individual teams trials! Way to paddle!
Terry Fox Run
Our philanthropic students raised a total of $1,450.00 for Cancer Research during our Annual Terry Fox Run on Thursday, September 22nd!
Unfortunately, students were just short of the $1,500.00 goal and teachers did not have to adopt “Mohawk” hair styles or dye their hair pink! (There’s always NEXT year, students!) Special thanks to Stephanie Wood (Will’s Mom) who sent in drinks for this event!
Remembrance Day
St. Michael’s will, once again, participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony to take place at the Heritage Hall in Low, beginning at 10:30a.m. All parents are welcome to join us for this poignant event. Our local seniors will be providing a lunch after the ceremony and we have been asked to provide drinks for our students. If any parents would be kind enough to send in drinking boxes for Remembrance Day, it would be greatly appreciated!
Added Touch Photography/School Pictures
Re-takes for student pictures will be held on Friday, October 21st, 2011. If your child was originally photographed on September 26th, these proofs must be handed in to the photographer before being allowed a re-take.
Physical Education/Outdoor Education
Many students are not prepared for Physical Education or Outdoor Education classes with proper attire and this is negatively affecting their marks. Students are attending classes after physical education in the same clothing and proper hygiene has become a concern. At the last Governing Board meeting on October 5th, this issue was addressed and the possibility of purchasing uniforms was raised. Please discuss this with your child and ensure that they have clothing suited to the weather to change into for physical education. (i.e., track pants for soccer or volleyball instead of the jeans they are already wearing) At present, gym teachers are giving 30 minute lunch detentions to students unprepared for class. Should this situation not improve, St. Michael’s Governing Board may make a decision to approve a motion that parents must purchase gym uniforms for their children.
Used Dictionaries
If any parents have French/English dictionaries at home which are not being used, we would love to have these donated to our French class as many students DO NOT have their own dictionaries. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
